Type of car

I would prefer to drive a sedan yet MS has not given me a choice! I want suggestions on cars. I am licensed and will modify the car with hand controls. I use a rolling walker at all times and a powerchair for long distances. I do not want a mini van. Can anyone suggest other ideas?

Thank you so much!

Best Cars for MSers
by: Akrista

Hi Tonia,

We've often thought about this very question. One car, well actually it's a pick-up truck, that many MSers really love is the Dakota. Here's a link - it will open in a new window. Unfortunately, it's not that much smaller than a mini-van. (Unless you don't mind driving a truck).

After searching "Best cars for the disabled", I came up with these two small/midsized SUV's or crossovers which they are called today. One is the Ford Edge/MKT and the other is the Chevrolet Traverse.

Here's a link comparing the two - (will open a new window).

The Traverse is "a nicely sized vehicle that offers full hand-control via the cruise-control capability and offers a multi-position power front seat that should let anyone, handicapped or fully able, to find a seating position that will work nicely".

The Ford Edge "...gives you a wide seating range. With a multi-adjustable power front seat, and it has a steering wheel-mounted speed control. Indeed, one can control the entire vehicle from the steering wheel by just pushing a few buttons".

I would be interested to know of any other suggestions from visitors. What car do they drive and would they recommend it to other disabled drivers? What vehicle is on their wishlist and why?

Hope this helps, Tonia. And we'll keep looking. Hopefully other visitors will jump right in with their suggestions for the best cars for disabled drivers. Let us know what you decide on. We'd love to read your review.

Take care,
